Spelling - Solving the Differentiation Problem

Spelling - Solving the Differentiation Problem

One of the biggest problems within key stage one is the different levels of ability and development that children within one class can have. This makes trying to evolve a unified strategy towards spellings very difficult.

Indeed it is a problem that continues throughout the school. By the time these children get to Year 6 there can be an even bigger difference in the reading and spelling ability of the pupils in the class.

So how do you know exactly which list of spellings each pupil needs?

The easy way to find out is to use the simple diagnostic tests found in our popular Spelling Programme. This is made up of two photocopiable books, one for Key Stage 1 and one for Key Stage 2.

The Key Stage 1 book matches the ‘Letters and Sounds’ six phase teaching programme. Weekly spelling lists are provided from phase 2 to phase 6.

‘Little Books’ help consolidate the 300 high frequency words. Record sheets track individual progress and supplementary lists are provided for children that need further reinforcement.

The Key Stage 2 book extends the weekly spelling lists from phases from 7 to 18. Assessment tests are provided for high frequency words as well as mixed revision lists for gifted and talented pupils.

In both books diagnostic tests direct groups /individuals to the correct phase they need to be working on regardless of age.
